Graduate Studies in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics offers a program of study leading to the Master of Science in Mathematics. This is a rigorous program of study consisting of 36 credit hours of graduate level coursework in both pure and applied mathematics. Students may choose to do directed research and a thesis as six of these credit hours. In addition to completing the required coursework with a grade of "B" or better in all courses, all M.S. candidates must pass a written and/or oral comprehensive examination to be awarded the M.S. degree.

The typical applicant to this program has the equivalent of a bachelor's degree in mathematics. If a student does not have the equivalent of a beachelor's degree in mathematics but has had a significant number of mathematics courses, it may be possible for such a student to be admitted to the program with the requirement that additional leveling work must be satisfactorily completed.

This program of study is intended to give student a broad and deep level of understanding of mathematics so that the student may continue his or her studies at the Ph.D. level, teach at the junior college level, or so that the student will have an advanced level of mathematical ability to be applied in industry. Students wondering what careers are available to mathematics majors should see our careers in mathematics link.
